With the warmer months on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about how you can keep looking super stylish on a hot Atlanta day.

One great option is a bespoke, lightweight blazer. As well as being ideal for the office when the air con is blasting out, a tailored summer blazer is also something that will serve you well on a night out, doing a bit of a high street shopping at a weekend, or even at a wedding with a relaxed vibe.

Weight and weave are the two things you need to remember when selecting a fabric for your summer blazer. Ideally, you want to be going for a cloth that comes in at around 240 to 270 grams (8 to 9 ounces) per square meter.

This is because you want a lightweight fabric that keeps you cool, but not one that is so thin that it doesn’t drape well across your body. Good options here are lightweight wool, cotton, hemp and linen.

As for the weave, you want a fairly open weave that allows air to pass through it. We have plenty of these fabrics at HKT which we can talk you through.

But as a general rule of thumb, you’re looking for a cloth that when you hold it up to the light you can partially see through it.

At HKT, we really love a well-fitted double-breasted suit jacket. But that’s just not the way to go with a summer blazer.

For one, it’s a look that’s a bit too formal for this pretty relaxed type of garment. And for two, a double-breasted jacket creates an extra layer of fabric around your torso, which means you’re going to get warmer, not cooler.

For these reasons, we’d always recommend choosing a single-breasted jacket for a custom made summer blazer.

As for the fit and look of that jacket, that’s entirely up to you if you’re going bespoke. You could go for a slim fit or a cut that’s more relaxed, choose the positioning and size of your pockets (angled looks really good on the hips), select the perfect buttons, and much more.

The structure you choose for your summer blazer really depends on where you’re going to wear it.

If you know you’re predominantly going to wear your new blazer in the office and at more formal events, then it’s probably worth thinking about getting your jacket fully lined and having some structure added with a bit of padding in the shoulders.

This will add weight to your jacket, but thanks to modern fabrics this isn’t likely to be too much.

Alternatively, if you’re thinking you might wear your blazer in the office and at more casual events too, then a half-lined jacket is definitely the way to go.

This means that only the shoulder and sleeves of your blazer are lined. As a result, you get smooth layering over anything you’re wearing underneath your jacket, easy movement, and still lots of good airflow around your body.

Finally, if you want something that is incredibly lightweight, then you could opt for a made to measure blazer that’s completely unlined.

This will definitely maximize airflow, but you do have the issue of all the seams and hems of your jacket being exposed, and if you wear a shirt underneath your blazer, it may lead to the sleeves of your jacket snagging on your shirt and bunching up.

What’s great about a summer blazer is that you can be much bolder with your color choices.

Navies and grays still look good, but why not go for a light blue, pink, orange or red? Or how about choosing our favorite color this year: sage?

It’s a lot warmer than black, navy or gray, but it’s still a shade you could wear for the office, as well as going for drinks post work.

If you’re favoring a patterned fabric for your summer blazer, rather than a solid color, we’d suggest going for something fairly bold. If you play safe and choose a pinstripe or subtle houndstooth check, you might end up with something that looks very similar to one of your suit jackets.

Instead, we’d suggest opting for a cloth with a windowpane pattern or eye-catching stripe. Or if you’re looking for a made-to-measure summer blazer that’ll definitely get you noticed on a nighttime or weekend, why not choose something really striking, like a floral pattern?

An additional bonus with choosing a patterned fabric for your summer blazer is that it makes your jacket less transparent. This is especially helpful if you’re wearing strong colors under your jacket, as it prevents them from being seen through the weave of your blazer.
